Course Content
This fun and practical course is based on recent research into the nature of memory. It explores how to use both left and right brain approaches to remember spellings. Delegates will leave with a rich tool bag of new resources designed to make spelling accessible for all learners.
The course will include:
- first word mnemonics - a new, very intuitive mnemonics approach for teaching irregular words
- spelling pictures - a novel visual method for teaching 'spelling families' (e.g. hurt, burn, turn, nurse, purse, purple)
- jingles - catchy phrases to remember the tricky bits of tricky spellings
- silly sound spelling - how to build aural hooks to remember spellings
- visual spelling - how to build visual hooks to remember spellings
- rainbow spelling - a way of making spelling lists fun!
- spelling choices - how to use phonics knowledge to make good spelling choices
We will also look at the government year 3 and 4 spelling lists and consider the best ways to teach these words. These words are now essential learning for Key Stage 2 tests.
Who's It For?
This course would suit class teachers and SENDCos as well as Teaching Assistants who support children who struggle to spell.
