Pupil attendance improving

DfE figures released this week show overall school attendance continued to improve in 2013/14; with authorised absence rates and the number of pupils classed as persistently absent decreasing and unauthorised absence remaining the same. Maintained primary schools have improved by 0.8% to 96.1% and secondary schools by 0.7% to 94.8%.

Maintained special schools follow the same trend with a 0.6% increase in attendance to 91%. Despite this, the persistent absence threshold increasing to 90% attendance in September 2015 means many more pupils will be categorised as persistently absent so it will be important to target intervention at this group.
