Selective Mutism

You may well have heard of selective mutism (SM) in which people who can speak are unable to speak in some situations because of anxiety.

This condition affects about 1 in 150 children – so we can reasonably expect at least one child to be affected in most schools. If left untreated, affected children can feel isolated with low self-esteem.

Identify the signs early; download leaflets and resources from the selective mutism charity SMIRA (working hard to raise awareness of this frustrating, misunderstood condition and how to help and support affected children).
