Is there Asbestos in Your School?

The DfE estimates the majority of schools contain some asbestos. The joint Union Asbestos Committee reports 158 school teacher deaths in the last ten years from asbestos-related cancer and 291 deaths since 1980.

The DfE has recently reviewed its schools asbestos policy and a Commons debate has taken place. The HSE has published FAQs and a checklist for schools to assess how well they are managing their asbestos as the responsibility lies with the ‘duty holder’ which for community schools, voluntary-controlled schools, maintained nursery schools and PRUs, is the local authority.

For academies, free schools, voluntary-aided and foundation schools, it is the governing body; and for independent schools, it may be the proprietor, governors or trustees.
