After 5 April 2015 couples with babies due or children matched or placed for adoption, will be able to share parental leave.
The legislation allows women to curtail their maternity leave to enable a partner to take shared parental leave, if qualifying requirements are met. As with any major change, preparation is key. ACAS has guidance for employers and employees. Whilst the uptake may be slow initially, schools need to give it some serious thought.
It is important to understand the legislation, what the possible impact will be and how it will be managed in practice, by schools, HR providers, payroll and line managers. Training ahead of any impact is vital along with a review of your school policies.
