Year one phonics check

As soon as SATs are over it will be time to turn our attention to the controversial phonics check.

For pupils who fail to meet the check threshold, there are a variety of options for catch-up support. The DfE backed Phonics Counts and Project X Code have been available for the last two years; however, the DfE have now funded a new programme, ‘Sound Check’, an intense scheme that has been trialled in 27 schools over the last two years. Schools already implement a wide range of interventions, so before embarking on more, think about implementing a root and branch review of your phonics teaching to achieve the highest impact.
