SEND: preparing for adulthood from the earliest years

Some schools with a January intake may be having another look at the SEND code of practice.

High aspirations for children and young people with SEND is a key theme. Early years providers and schools need to work alongside families to ensure that they are ambitious for their children, right from the start. Families need to know that ‘the great majority of children…with SEND, with the right support, can find work, be supported to live independently, and participate in their community’.

Having the right support to achieve greater independence and employability can be life-changing. We must ensure that children with SEND develop positive friendships, engage fully in school life and within the wider community; building on their strengths and interests as a basis for planning support.
