Top Tips for Appraisals

Understand your responsibilities as an appraiser as detailed in your school policy

Make sure you know the Teachers' Standards to enable assessment against these as well as against individual obejectives 

Set appropriate objectives that are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound)

Avoid aspirational targets. Ensure objectives reflect the individual's point in their career

Allow for ongoing communication to provide feedback opportunities for regular feedback and review

Remember to highlight particular areas of strengths as well as any areas that need attention 

Engage with the appraisee and provide appropriate support as part of the appraisal process

Ensure an audit trail is created to evidence the appraisal process

Remember the outcome is a written report to include an assessment of training and development needs and any pay recommendation

Be clear and concise and maintain confidentiality at all times
