Looked After Children (LAC)

Our educational psychology team have a specialist Looked After Children Team who work closely with the Virtual School and Social Workers in Manchester.

The EP-LAC team offer regular ‘drop-in’ consultations to all social workers. The team also offer schools the opportunity to discuss the needs of Manchester looked after children and young people via a telephone consultation which can be booked online. Find out more by contacting Manchester Virtual School

These consultations provide the opportunity for discussion and joint problem solving to improve educational outcomes. They also support the Virtual School in offering training and guidance for schools/colleges and nurseries educating looked after children/young people. The work of the EP-LAC Team includes a number of different approaches - consultation, advice on the SEND/EHC code of practice and processes, intervention/outcome planning, and attendance at PEP meetings and training.

We aim to:

  • Contribute a psychological perspective on the child/young person’s needs.
  • Identify barriers to learning and facilitate problem-solving.
  • Support schools to accommodate to the child/young person’s needs.
  • Contribute support to maintain educational/care placements. Such work could include promoting an understanding of the child based on their developmental history and using attachment theory and an understanding of the reaction to loss, transition and trauma.
  • Ensure, with other professional colleagues, that appropriate educational provision is identified and accessed.
  • This year we are also going to provide termly Designated Teacher support sessions.

Training in this area includes:

  • Attachment and Trauma
  • Building Resiliency across the School, Emotional Coaching Approaches and Supporting Transitions for LAC.
