Developing a reading school where adults and children love books
Simon and Clare will share how Hartford Manor has grown into a reading school. They will explore how 6 key strategies underpin reading at their school:
- Making every child a reader
- Developing book centred curriculum
- Nurturing reading teachers
- Developing strong reading networks
- The importance of book talk and teaching vocabulary
- Building a school literature spine
Simon Kidwell and Clare de Wolff
Simon has worked as a Headteacher for thirteen years. He has led three successful Primary schools to achieve rapid and sustained improvement. He has facilitated the implementation of the Every Child a Reader programme in two schools and believes that reading is the heart of school improvement.
In addition to his role as a Headteacher, Simon is an Associate School Improvement Advisor for Cheshire West and has worked with a number of schools to help them achieve good outcomes for children.
He is the serving Cheshire Branch Secretary for the Cheshire National Association of Headteachers and was recently voted onto their Executive Board. Simon uses his position to champion children, teachers and school leaders and makes regular contributions to local and national media.
Clare has worked as a class teacher for more than twenty years with the greater part of this being in upper Key Stage 2. For a number of years, she has worked with small groups to target specific needs and overcome barriers to learning.
She values and promotes a broad and balanced curriculum with reading at the heart of it.
Clare is passionate about encouraging ‘teachers as readers’ and getting children to want to read for pleasure. Her appetite for children’s literature leaves her happily book rich but wallet poor with a ‘to be read’ pile that threatens to topple at any moment.
