Governors are responsible for ensuring high standards in schools, which is dependent on having high quality teaching and learning taking place. Governors therefore need to be confident that the school has effective systems in place to manage staff performance and the performance of the headteacher.
The national teachers’ standards are used to hold teachers to account and there are national standards for headteachers which outline the ethics and professional conduct expected of them, as well as providing ten headteacher standards which build on the teachers’ standards.
