Whilst the full extent of the impact of COVID-19 will take decades to be fully understood, there is little dispute that the experiences of UK school children during this time has affected their development and the way they access education. When the extent of school closures, social distancing, and mask wearing are considered, it is of little surprise that more and more children are presenting in school as having delayed language and social skills. This session will focus on the challenges this presents for staff when identifying SEND, including exploring the difference between delayed and disordered language development and the strategies/tools that can be used to ensure that the identification of SEND is appropriate given the previous experiences of the pupils.
