School Brand

Deciding which school to send your child to is one of the biggest decisions a family makes. As a parent myself, with a little boy due to start Reception in September 2026, I’ll be going through that process this coming autumn, visiting schools, reading Ofsted reports, and, importantly, asking other parents what they think. While performance results and facilities play a role, I am more concerned with a school’s reputation within the community. A strong, positive school brand helps parents feel confident that your school is a caring, trustworthy place where their children will thrive.

The good news is, creating that kind of brand doesn’t require a large budget. It’s about showing who you are, what you believe in, and how you support your pupils. As I think ahead to the school my son will spend the next six years in, what I really want to see is somewhere he’ll be cared for, happy, safe, and surrounded by opportunities to grow not just academically, but socially and emotionally too.

Highlight What Makes You Unique

Every school has its own strengths. Perhaps you have a focus on outdoor learning, a strong sense of community, many extra-curricular opportunities or a creative approach to the curriculum.

Start by identifying the qualities that set your school apart. Think about:

  • Your values and ethos
  • The experiences you offer children
  • What you want families to remember about you

Once you are clear on your key messages, it becomes easier to communicate them consistently. As a prospective parent, I’m looking for those qualities to absolutely shine through when I walk through the doors or visit the school website. It helps me picture whether this is the right environment for my child to flourish.

Share Your Story

Families want to know what daily life is like in your school. Sharing real stories and examples helps build trust and gives people an insight into your values.

You could highlight:

  • Classroom activities and projects
  • Trips and visits
  • Celebrations of pupils’ achievements
  • Staff contributions and successes
  • Community events and partnerships

Use your website, newsletters and social media to share these stories regularly. Keeping your communication authentic will help parents connect with your school.

Personally, I love seeing the little moments, children working and playing together, interaction with teachers, smiles and laughter because those are glimpses into what school life could be like for my little boy.

Make the Most of Community Newsletters

Community newsletters are a valuable way to reach families and local residents beyond your immediate school community. They can help share your successes and keep people informed about what’s happening in your school.

Consider including:

  • Short updates about recent events or trips
  • Spotlights on staff or pupil achievements
  • Invitations to upcoming activities or open days

Whether you produce a printed newsletter, an email version, or both, regular updates show that your school is active, approachable and proud of what you do.

Build Strong Relationships with Parents

Parents and carers are your biggest advocates. Positive experiences often lead to recommendations to other families.

To strengthen these relationships:

  • Communicate clearly and regularly
  • Be open to questions and feedback
  • Involve parents in events and activities

When parents feel informed and included, they are more likely to support your school and share positive word of mouth. Knowing I’ll be handing over my child to someone else’s care each day, that sense of open communication and partnership really matters. It builds the trust every parent needs.

Engage with Your Local Community

Your school is part of the wider community. Building links beyond your gates helps raise your profile and shows that you care about the place you belong to.

Consider:

  • Working with local businesses and charities
  • Taking part in community events and fairs
  • Offering your facilities for local groups to use

These connections demonstrate that your school is open, welcoming and invested in the community’s wellbeing.

Keep Your School Brand Consistent

A consistent brand helps families recognise your school easily and reinforces a sense of trust.

Make sure your materials, from your website to your prospectus, reflect the same tone and look. Use your logo, colours and messaging in a clear, professional way.

Review your communication regularly to keep it up to date and aligned with your values.

By sharing your story, making good use of newsletters, involving parents and maintaining clear, consistent communication, you can create a reputation that families feel proud to be part of. For parents like me, who are just starting that journey, those efforts can make all the difference when it comes to choosing the place we’ll entrust with the start of our child’s education journey.
