The Government’s Plan for Change puts children at the heart of its priorities. As part of this, they are providing training for all Reception Teachers to carry out the EYFS Profile accurately.
The EYFSP is underpinned by a set of Assessment Principles
- Holistic, best fit judgements
- Inclusive Assessment
- Interconnected Early Learning Goals
- Informed by the child’s background.
Early Years Assessment Support
The DFE has recently developed its assessment support to strengthen EYFS profile assessment, build clarity and confidence in EYFS profile judgements, and support effective ongoing assessment across the early years. This is part of a wider support package to achieve the ambition of 75% of Reception-aged children achieving a good level of development by 2028.
A suite of online training materials have been produced, hosted on the Help for early years providers : Get help for your setting website. They include written information, bite-size videos and case studies on key assessment themes (e.g. best-fit judgements and inclusive assessment). There is also additional EYFS profile content in the free online early years child development training.
In addition, all local authorities in England have been asked by the DFE to facilitate FREE EYFSP assessment support sessions to share best practice, build practitioner confidence, and promote consistent assessment by addressing misconceptions. ALL schools, including academies and free schools are expected to fully engage with these.
There will be three sessions each financial year, aimed primarily at Reception teachers, although Nursery teachers can also attend (in addition, not instead of):
- Professional Dialogue (Summer)
- Formative Assessment (Autumn)
- Summative Assessment (Spring)
