“All our children should be successful writers able to share their ideas confidently and articulately. Enabling children to write clearly and well is critical to success both at school and beyond.”

The Writing Framework, Department for Education, 2025.

On Tuesday 8th July, the Department for Education published The Writing Framework. This non-statutory guidance aims to share selected research and best practice in the teaching of writing from Reception to Year 6. The Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, explained that the framework will mean that, “For the first time we will have, in one place, guidance on the most important aspects of teaching writing, based on the best available research to enable all our children to become confident, fluent writers able to share their ideas and find their voice.”

Reactions to the framework have been mixed, with particular concern levelled at the expectations for children in Reception. We’ll be delving into some of the potential myths and misconceptions the framework could fuel in an upcoming blog. In the meantime, to help you, we’ve recorded a summary of the key points from the guidance which can be accessed here.

The document is non-statutory, therefore if what you are doing in your school or trust is working for your pupils, you do not need to change anything as a result of the framework’s publication. However, if you are looking to develop your practice futher, using this document may be where you choose to start.

We’ll be unpicking the key messages from the framework and how these relate to best practice in our Literacy Leads Network session in Autumn term. To find out more or to book a place, visit our website.
