As the new academic year begins, it’s a great time to explore the new books that are hitting the shelves. From autumnal cosy reads, to books focused on the ghoulish and ghostly for Halloween, there are so many to choose from! We’ve chosen just some of our favourite to share with you here.
For younger readers, you can’t beat Scooter Dog by Lo Cole. Telling the story of Eddie, a dog who likes to go SUPERFAST on his scooter, this beautifully illustrated picture book explores what happens when we slow down and observe the world around us.

The wonderful Ant Life by Moesha Kellaway tells the story of Anita the ant, who just can’t seem to choose a job. Follow Anita’s journey of discovery from the colony job fair to her wider travels, finding out about ants along the way.

We’re big fans of Tom Percival, and his newest Big Bright Feelings book is another gem. Sammy Feels Shy follows Sammy at school, where he’s keen to participate in all the fun, but things are just a bit overwhelming. It’s a reassuring book that is great one to share in class to talk about feelings.

For readers in KS2, Unfairies by Huw Aaron is hard to beat. There’s been an explosion of good graphic novels for primary children recently and this is no exception. Follow Pip on a frantic adventure to find out the truth about fairies: they’re not nearly so pretty, friendly and magical as everyone believes them to be!

Thinking ahead to Remembrance Day but with wonderful wider curriculum links too, the anthology Words from War is a great addition to any school library. Pairing poems with biographical text about their poets, the book includes a focus on conflict from the Trojan War to the present day.Â

For 11+ readers, Domain by Rohan Gavin follows the 14 year old Porter who agrees to test an experimental technology. Porter gains access to his ‘domain’, where hundreds of apps are available directly in his brain, but the problem is he’s always online. Worse still, someone seems to be out to get him. A great book to start a wider conversation about technology, the good, the bag and the ugly.

Newly published in paperback, A Language of Dragons by S.F. Williamson is set in an alternate history where dragons and humans coexist. In the midst of a civil war, Viv is forced to work as a dragon language codebreaker to keep her family safe. Whilst working on what seems to be an almost impossible code, Viv finds out more about the dragons as well as herself.Â

Finally for Young Adult readers, Love on Sight by Asli Jensen tells the story of Sabrina and Jalaal as they fall in love one summer. Told in dual narrative, the story explores the thrills and complexities of falling in love, not shying away from the reality of the relationship for both characters.Â
