Why choose the One Education Reading Award

The One Education Reading Award is a Reading Quality Standard for schools and settings. It is the only Reading Quality Mark that supports schools with the development of their entire Reading curriculum.

The process has been very supportive, really helping school improvement. We aren’t finished yet, but the award is already having a huge impact on raising the profile of reading across school.

Sally Judge
Delamere School

We wanted to complete the award to offer an opportunity to evaluate our current and future work in reading. We found the process extremely supportive and powerful – it enabled our school to build on what we currently do and work on what we need to. Children’s outcomes and the quality of reading experiences vastly improved, with the award bringing collaboration and consistency.

Helena Angstmann
St. Joseph's Catholic Primary Academy

We chose to work towards the award to raise the profile of reading in our school, to train staff on how to teach reading effectively and to help children enjoy reading more. Completing the award is raising the awareness and importance of reading for teachers, children and parents. It has been a turning point for our school.

Reading Award

Reading Award

Schools will be awarded bronze, silver or gold awards to celebrate their efforts in promoting literacy and the pleasure of reading. With over 100 schools involved across the country, participants will have the chance to join our network of Reading Award partner schools, learning from one another and growing in practice together.

How Does the Reading Award Work?

Schools can choose one of three awards to work towards:

  • Bronze: good provision is evident in Reading
  • Silver: excellent provision is evident in Reading
  • Gold: excellent provision is embedded across all areas of Reading

Schools will then have one calendar year to complete the award, using the criteria and over 250 resources to guide their development of Reading. Throughout the process, schools will gather evidence for each of the criteria.

After a review of evidence is completed and successful you will have achieved your award.

Reading Award accreditation lasts for three years. It can then be renewed through a streamlined assessment process.
